Çalıkdüzü Basın and Desert Lake

Desert Lake and Çalıkdüzü form a small, closed basin located in the south of Ankara province. Desert Lake is a shallow and salty lake, which has a brackish water, located at the southern end of the Çalıkdüzü Basin. It dries in summer to a great extent. On the northern and southern boundaries of the lake, there are saline areas, wet meadows, and juncus beds.

St. Teresa Church

St. Therese Catholic Church is located in Kardeşler Street, in Ulus district of Ankara. The most important part of the church building is the chapel on the first floor, all parts of which were restored in 2002. The main mosaic of the building was inspired by the Cappadocian churches and was made by the French artist Hervè Vital. On the right side of the main mosaic are depicted two great kings, David, who was promised Christ to be his descendant, and Solomon who built the Holy Temple. On the left is the Blessed Virgin with Child Jesus in his arms, on the right is the Christ holding the Bible in one hand and blessing with the other. The mystery of the Eucharist is told in the heart of the cross made by Madeleine Diener. The chapel’s light is due to the stained glass on the side of the columns. Six of these stained glasses were produced in 1914 by D.P. Dagrant in Bordeaux.

Museum of Artillery and Missile Class School

The museum is organized into three main sections: the museum garden, the exhibition hall, and the Hall of Honor. In the garden, visitors encounter a rich collection spanning from the 16th century to the present day. Over 70 cannons, howitzers, and mortars from the Ottoman, Turkish, Mamluk, Russian, German, French, Austrian, Belgian, Swedish, and American armies are on display. Crafted from iron, wrought iron, bronze, and steel, these pieces showcase the historical evolution of military technology across different eras and armies. Inside the museum, the exhibition hall features artillery uniforms, weapons, and surveying and cartography tools used by artillery units in the past. The collection also includes cutting and piercing weapons, swords, daggers, armors, and helmets dating from the 15th to 19th centuries. Additionally, Ottoman and Greek maps and battle plans from World War I and the Turkish War of Independence provide visitors with detailed insights into historic military operations. The museum offers a comprehensive experience for visitors interested in military heritage, the evolution of warfare technology, and the significance of historical documents.

Ankara Houses

Houses located in the old settlements of the city, particularly the inner walls of the castle, are called Ankara houses. A handful of these houses are still preserved. They are Ankara houses from the 17th- 18th-19th centuries; two-floored houses built mostly of wood and mudbrick. On the ground floor, there were rooms for servants while the landlord lived on the second floor. Ankara houses generally have a stairway attached to the outer wall that climbs up to a terrace called seyregah or seyrengah. This terrace is open on all sides but is sheltered with a roof. Seyregah and windows of the house are vents to the street. Guest rooms, meeting rooms and bedrooms are located on the second floor. Ceilings, ceiling roses, doors and other sections of houses are decorated with geometrical, rumi and hatai motifs. Several such houses are used for touristic purposes nowadays. Examples of Ankara houses are found in Hamamönü, which is in the old town of Altındağ. Nearby towns like Ayaş, Beypazarı and Güdül are also home to traditional houses. Around the bazaar area located at the bottom of the valley and in valley slopes up north, traditional houses of Ayaş maintain their organic forms, resembling typical Turkish houses regarding their architecture. The two-floored Ayaş houses, partly built of stone and partly of wood, include a stable, a cellar and rooms for servants (in wealthy houses) on the ground floor. On the second floor, which is the main living space, there is the kitchen, the bath and two (or three) rooms on both sides of the anteroom. All the ceilings are made of wood. In the exterior of the building, there are wooden bay windows called ‘cumba’ and wooden-caged windows. In the town centre of Güdül, historic houses that have the characteristics of Turkish houses are still standing today in the archaeological urban site. The old quarter of the town of Beypazarı, which is founded on steep slopes and valleys, is a place of settlement that offers a historic and visual feast with its rich landscape and unique texture of old houses and bazaars. The hundred-year-old houses of Beypazarı have the typical aspects of Ottoman and traditional Turkish houses. These are two or three floored houses with cumbas (bay windows) and attics called ‘kuşkana’. The houses are wooden structures on stone foundations with plastered walls and tiled roofs. There are rooms for servants and a cellar on the ground floor. On the second floor, there is the kitchen, the bath and the rooms on both sides of the rectangular or square anteroom.

Wonderland

Wonderland, Europe’s largest park, has a total usage area of 1 million 320 thousand square meters.. It is possible to enjoy the artificial ponds in the area in boats and on pedalos. There are picnic areas, go-cart and skateboard track, model ship sailing area, model plane areas, model car tracks, astroturfs, basketball courts, mini golf courses, ping-pong tables, tennis courts and mini train in the park. Various shows are organized at the Nejat Uygur Amphitheatre. There are suitable routes for riding bicycles and scooters. There are colourful sculptures of various fairy tale heroes in the park, and there is a cinema hall showing cartoons about these fairy tale heroes. There are also wedding halls, kiosks, and cafes in the park.

Turkish Natıional Botanic Garden Agriculture and Biodiversity Museum

Turkish National Botanic Garden Agriculture and Biodiversity Museum is a unique museum that brings together the heritage of agricultural education from the Ottoman era to the Republic and Türkiye’s rich flora and fauna diversity with its visitors. The collection, gathered through the initiatives of the Turkish National Botanical Garden, is presented with scientific and cultural expertise in this museum, which was established under the Ministry of Agriculture and Forestry. The museum’s main themes include the history of agriculture from Göbeklitepe to the present day, agricultural education from the Ottoman period to the Republic, and the country’s biodiversity. The structure consists of three main sections: the Temporary Exhibition Section, the Permanent Exhibition Section, and the Workshop-Storage area, attracting attention not only with its scientific content but also with an aesthetic and experience-focused exhibition approach. Turkish National Botanic Garden Agriculture and Biodiversity Museum is an original space for learning and discovery that carries the awareness of agriculture and nature from the past into the future.

Ankara Adnan Ötüken Provincial Public Library

Adnan Ötüken Provincial Public Library was first established on 25 July 1922. After providing services in different buildings, it was moved to its current building in 1983. In 1985, the library’s name was changed to Adnan Ötüken Provincial Public Library in honour of Adnan Ötüken, the founder of the National Library. It was designed and built by the architect Paul Bonatz between 1944- 46. To borrow books, you must become a member. Membership is free; yet some of the books can only be read inside the library. You can return any book you borrow from this library to a different public library in another city.

Art Street

Consisting of 22 restored traditional Ankara houses, Art Street is one of the areas in Hamamönü worth seeing. Its renovation project was carried out collaboratively by Altındağ Municipality and Hacettepe University. The historic Ankara houses on this street host artists practicing handicrafts that are in danger of extinction. The upper floors of the houses are used as art studios; lower floors are for displaying the art works. Women attending handicrafts courses and producing throughout the year present their works to visitors at the Handicrafts Market. At the market, which is open 7 days a week, leather goods, home accessories, decorative items and oil paintings are on sale. There are also live concerts featuring melodies of various cultures and a summer open-air cinema showing Turkish films.

TRT Museum of Broadcasting History

Various educational and promotional films explaining the basic elements of publishing, along with the research library within the museum, demonstrate that the museum is not only a place for visits but also a versatile space offering learning opportunities. The museum is located within the premises of the Turkish Radio and Television Corporation (TRT) General Directorate.

Hacı Bayram Veli Mosque and Tomb

Located next to the Augustus Temple in Ulus, the mosque was built between 1427-1428 upon the wish of Hacı Bayram Veli. It has a longitudinal rectangular floor plan, a stone base, brick walls, and a tiled roof. It was constructed in Seljuk architectural style and repaired by Mimar Sinan. Double balconied minaret rising on the southeast wall has a square stone base and has a cylindrical body of brick. Plaster mihrab rises from the ground to the ceiling. Interior walls are decorated with Kütahya ceramics up to the level of the low windows. Tomb of Hacı Bayram is located next to the southern wall of the mosque.
