The Grand National Assembly of Türkiye (TBMM) building was designed by Austrian architect Prof. Clemens Holzmeister. Construction began on October 26, 1939, but due to World War II, the building process was halted at times. After 1957, work resumed with increased speed, and the building was completed in January 1961. The TBMM building, which opened for service at the same time, covers an area of 475,000 square meters. The building is one of the largest parliamentary buildings in the world. During the coup attempt on the night of July 15, 2016, it was bombed four times by the coup plotters while members of parliament were inside. This attack damaged the Honor Gate, Dikmen Gate, and the visitor entrances. Visitor groups arriving by appointment are given a presentation on the history of the assembly, the building, and the campus in the listener’s box of the TBMM General Assembly Hall; afterwards, they are taken to tour the areas damaged during the July 15 coup attempt. Visits are held on mondays, fridays, and saturdays, with English presentations available for foreign guests.
