Acknowledged as the ancestor of longhaired cats, it is considered that Ankara cat was taken from its homeland in Anatolia to Europe by the Vikings in 10th century. Known as the ancestor of long-haired cats in these countries, Ankara cat is one of the most beautiful cats in the world that has kept its popularity throughout history. Pursaklar Municipality has established the Pursaklar Ankara Cat Protection and Promotion Centre for this species under protection. At the centre, located near Esenboğa Airport on a 2,000 square meter area, there are two cat homes, an operating theatre, a veterinary room, administrative staff offices, a 240-square-meter cat promotion house, a delivery room, a quarantine and a short stay unit. The purpose of centre is to ensure the continuation of the species via breeding and to promote the Ankara cat through international competitions
