The columns are on the banks of a stream in the village of Balcılar in Kızılcahamam, 100 meters away from the village cemetery. The basalts are lava rocks of hexagonal shape, with a width of 50-70 centimetres that are abundant in iron and magnesium. They were formed 20-25 million years ago because of volcanic eruptions. The basalt columns in Balcılar offer a regular form when compared to those in Beşkonak.
